The Role of Predation:

Keystone Species:
def. a species that is not necessarily abundant in the community, yet exerts strong control over the community structure because of its role in the niche. A keystone species in the taiga biome that is found Zabaikalsky National Park is the ermine (Martes erminea). The ermine is apart of the weasel family. These organisms not only keep the snowshoe hare population in check, which helps the producers not become extinct for being eaten, but are the main food source for the brown bears and the crested-honey buzzard. Without the ermine, the hare population, along with the insect population directly, would become out of control, destroying most of the vegetation and causing the extinction of other species of herbivores. The Crested-Honey buzzards main food source would also be removed, causing a severe decrease in the buzzard population. |
Endangered Species:
The definition of an endangered species is a species that is in a serious risk of becoming extinct. (2) |
